High School: A time in our lives that sets the mold for who we are going to be in this world. It does this by teaching us great lessons about life, ourselves, and other people through various experiences. One of these experiences I chose to take part in was football. It was this decision that led me to this fateful day. A day in which my left leg was shattered and my perspectives on life were drastically changed. The journey I had embark on to deal with all of the after effects of this event taught me life lessons I’ll never forget. It was October 24th, 2014. This date fell on a Friday and during football season that meant it was game day for most high school teams. Not just any game though, it was our district championship. Introduction Modern Family TV shows have been a very popular comedy series, which introduced a show that sounds like an attempt to portray a more â€Å"Modern† contemporary view of American families. In both shows I watched: â€Å"Do Not Push† and â€Å"Marco Polo†. Modern Family deals with the traditional family as portrayed by the Dunphys with a mom, dad and three children; a homosexual family with one adopted daughter, the Printhett-Tuckers and a mixed marriage family with one child, the Pritchetts, an older white male remarried a much younger Colombian trophy wife who had a son from her first marriage. In the Modern Family name, the word â€Å"modern† suggests a stray from the normative, something new, and something innovative. These behaviors reflect the traditional dominant beliefs that our culture shares about the traditional old-fashioned role of the mother and the father. The third family, a homosexual couple and an adopted daughter have don’t have a traditional history and the writers flip flop the gender roles of the 2 male partners from mom to dad and back again. At first glance, the three families convey illusions of modernity. Meet the traditional Dunphy family consists of Phil-the husband and the father whose wacky character is the breadwinner and works as a real estate agent. Claire, Phil’s wife, is a stay-at-home mother to take care their three children Haley, Alex, and Luke. At the surface, you might even think Claire’s character rejects the dominant ideology of the mother figure. An example of â€Å"Do Not Push† of Season 6-Episode 2, Claire tries to convince her daughter, Alex, to stay close to home when Alex is touring the campus and flirting with her male counterpart. The process through which Oedipus uncovers the details of the disease directly parallels the process used by the television show House M. D, in which Dr. House unravels complex mysteries surrounding a patients sickness. Dr. Houses method of uncovering information is extremely unorthodoxhe threatens and manipulates anyone who can help him, often becoming obsessed with solving the medical puzzle. Oedipus follows in the same direction, becoming hell bent on finding the origin of the sickness, assaulting those who withhold information from him and dismissing anyone who opposes him. The mental and physical likeness of the two characters was instrumental in the decision of depicting Oedipus as Dr. House. Scripting was essential in making the theme of the rendition obvious to the audience, as it established the medical tone, aided each actors portrayal of his or her character and helped determine the look of the play. The scripting of the play was used to mimic the tone of House M. D. The initial script served as a rough outline for the entire production and thus established the overall tone of the play. The first step was to locate any lines dealing with the issue of sickness and emphasise the scenes in which the cause of the sickness is discussed. As a result, the opening lines pertained to the sickness and helped establish the medical theme: What is the meaning of these prayers for the healing of pain? Sophocles 25. It was also necessary to sustain the consistency of the medical references and eliminate irrelevant dialogue. To achieve this characters had to written out of the script. The first example of this is the Priest, who was replaced by Creon to create a scene of fast paced dialogue between Oedipus and Creon, again mimicking House M. Ds technique of discussing an illness. By selectively choosing lines, Oedipus egotistical nature became more apparent, thus making it more obvious to the audience that Oedipus was meant to be Dr. House. This process placed emphasis on lines spoken by Oedipus, as his self-proclaimed talent was an identifying mark of hubrisa tragic flaw that both Dr. House and Oedipus constantly display: You have prayed; and your prayers shall be answered if you will obey me Sophocles 31; I have saved this land from ruin. I am content. Sophocles 37; No god will speak for me. Sophocles 68. Dr. House, much like Oedipus, only displays true hubris during social conflict, when his real thoughts become apparent. uphold Oedipus arrogant attitude and maintain conflict, it was again necessary to drastically shorten the lines of miscellaneous characters, as they had little or no conflict with Oedipus. For Jocasta Dr. Cuddy in House M. D, Oedipus wife, it was essential to eliminate much of the dialogue between her and Oedipus that was non-confrontational; the resulting scene between the two characters is much more edgy and engaging as Oedipus and Jocasta exchange remarks in a manner similar to those between Dr. House and Dr. Cuddy: JOCASTA: For the love of God, believe it, Oedipus! / OEDIPUSangered: And why should I repent? Sophocles 43. Jocastas limited role had another purpose: due to a lack of actors, Jocasta had to be played by an outside helper, thus it was easier for her to be written as an off-stage character. The conflict between the two of them helped to give Jocasta some dominance and masked the fact that she was physically missing. Lastly, the initial scripting included brackets to indicate how a certain line should be delivered, often to emphasise a certain aspect of House M. D. For example, Oedipus is indicated to say certain lines in a bitter voice, as would Dr. House: OEDIPUSbitter: And while you suffer, none suffers more than I! Sophocles 27. The initial scripting gave the group a rough outline of what was to be said, but even more important was the way the lines were to be delivered. Literature Essay PaperThe characters clothing was the most blunt and direct form of recognition for the audience, thus it had to be carefully planned. To represent Dr. House, Manish wore classic jeans with a dress shirt and a blazer. To make it even more obvious, he used a caneDr. Houses signature propand a bottle of pills. To create the setting of a hospital, many of the characters were dressed like doctors. Saad, depicting Dr. Wilson, wore a lab coat and carried a stethoscope. Brendan and Shivon, meant to be Dr. Houses team, both wore lab coats and stuck together, speaking in turns to establish that they were a team. To further show that it was a hospital, a small waiting room was added at the end of the stage, with several extras reading magazines while waiting for a doctor. At the other end of the stage was Dr. Houses desk, where Manish used the blackboard to write out the symptoms of an illness, exactly as it seen on House M. D. The look of the play was detrimental to the tone of the play: the lab coats made the discussion of the illness seem much more serious and the congregation of doctors made the quest of searching for a cure plausible. Before any of the visuals were used, a distinguished audio clip was usedthe theme song of House M. D. The clip was again an effort to mirror House M. D, but was also used to build tension in the audience. Another important factor of the play was the stage direction. The characters went back and forth across the stage, constantly utilizing different parts of the stage to give the play a moving feel, as House M. D often refuses to stay in one location for more than a few minutes. The look of the play was the easiest way for the audience to realise what the theme of the play was and was executed carefully to give as many visual clues as possible. Scripting was a dynamic process that was constantly altered to keep up with any changes made to the play. Although it was most first used to establish tone, secondly used to accentuate character and used minimally for the look of the play, the significance of each of these elements occurs in the reverse order. That is to say, the look of the play was the most important, as it immediately clarified the theme. Once the blatant visual techniques made the audience obvious to the theme, the audience had a chance to understand the portrayals of the characters and finally was able to follow the subtle scripting parallels. It is impossible to separate each element into when it was considered, since they are all interdependent: throughout the development of the script, the portrayal of the characters is heavily pondered as is the overall look of the play. Similarly, the final portrayal of each character is only perfected through scripting changes and visual decisions. The theme of the rendition was excellently clarified throughout the play because each of the aspects was skilfully interconnected through use of flexible scripting.

Jeffrey Santos Professor Shrivastava Experiencing Literature 10/15/17 The Complete Maus Essay Prompt In English class we read a book called "The Complete Maus" by Art Spiegelman. I have been given an assignment that is based off of Spiegelman's use of the famous comic strip. He uses the comic in many different ways but with one main way being, to help the reader fully engage into his thoughts. The Washington Post stated that what Spielgelman did was "impossible to achieve in any medium but comics." Comic strips help the reader dice into the small but important details of the story by giving them interesting drawings that spark their attention. Comics also come with words to give the reader more of an easy understanding of what he or she is reading. This being said, my goal of this paper is to prove the Washington Post in a positive way and to help their statement be correct. To help explain my stand on this, in my first paragraph I will talk about Spielgelman's representation and reliability of his story. Since he relies on his father's thoughts, some may think that the reliability of the drawings may not be valid enough to fully believe. In the second paragraph I will discuss the multiple time frames and how he shifts from one time frame to another but also has multiple present things within one time frame. And in my final paragraph I will discuss the shifts of point of view and how he runs two parallel points of views and still achieves his goal in the story. Representation and reliability is something all if not most people worried about with Spiegelman's comic strip. The main difference in Spiegelman's representation of memory vs other authors is his use of drawings and intriguing images. Even though he relies on his father's thoughts and memories, he also uses real images to help us understand and solidify his father's memories to be true. On page (75) in Spielgelman's book he draws his father's family sitting around a dinner table discussing the hardships of the time that they were living in, and shortly after that there is an image of his son dumping his food onto the table. Clearly his father and his family are very self-giving and protective of everyone still breathing. Although Artie and his father had a rough relationship in the beginning, the comic helps us understand that by the second comic story, Art and his father become close again and begin to understand each other like they used to. With the two of them bonding through hi s father's memory filled talk, it helps us believe that Artie actually helped us readers understand his father's memories and a more diverse and interesting way. He represents his father to his best ability and helps us readers understand fully. He uses his representation within the comic extremely well and it would be hard to tackle all of these things in a written novel. When writing a comic strip you must pay attention to your use in change of time frames and Spiegelman does that and then some. The reader moves through several different historical positions throughout the whole story. They also move through narrative events such as pre Holocaust, the Holocaust, and the post Holocaust, but also, within one time frame there can be multiple times present and co-resent. Maus intertwines the past and the present extremely well to the point where they are simply parallel to each other. He combines the different subject histories of each protagonist, and the different Nazi views located in Rego Park, New York. Artie manages to add many small narratives within the bigger pictures throughout the story. For example, Arties struggles to understand his family's origins and himself as well. Although Artie was talking about the Holocaust through the whole story, he uses small examples to show his struggles in the story as well. Artie asks Vladek for Antje's diaries and Vladek then tells him that the diaries are gone. The interesting part of this story is that Artie then remembers that he burned them himself and this memory puts him into a deep depression. Even though The Emancipation Proclamation was a historic event and precipitated the end of slavery, the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery. This was because Lincoln did not have a deep conviction for or against slavery. Lincoln's objective was to preserve the Union and not to free the slaves. Blacks were allowed to enlist in the Union Army and Navy and consequently became agents of their own liberation. Lincoln needed extra troops on the ground in order to defeat the Confederacy and preserve the Union. Over 200,000 black troops were added to the Union Army. Another example that shows that The Emancipation Proclamation was a historic event and precipitated the end of slavery was the subsequent passing of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution. The Emancipation Proclamation was a precursor to the thirteenth amendment which made slavery illegal in every state, not just those affected by the Em ancipation Proclamation. Congress ratified the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution on December 6, 1865. (13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: Abolition of Slavery n.d.) Without the Emancipation Proclamation mandating freedom for some blacks, there would not have been the impetus for Congress to pass sweeping legislation mandating freedom to all blacks in the form of the Thirteenth Amendment.
